In Western Fukushima’s pristine countryside lies Mifuke, a village abandoned over 50 years ago, shortly before the landslide. The area is known as ‘Mugenkyo’, which translates as ‘misty gorge’, because of the fog that enveloped its landscape during the summer, creating a mystical scene. The only way to get to the village was to cross the Tadami River, so the villagers used to go to the opposite bank by rowboat.
Now, visitors can ride on a ferryboat known as ‘Mugenkyo no Watashi’, and explore the traces of the village’s past, such as the Oyamazumi Shrine, Koyasu Kannon, and Jizo statues, as well as old houses, sulfur mines and industrial remains that seem suspended in time.
The shrine, Kannon, and Jizo, which have escaped repeated disasters, are attracting attention as power spots that protect us from hardships.
